House prices in England and Wales rose by 0.6% in June, driven by a 3.1% increase in prices paid in London, according to figures from the Land Registry. Despite the headline growth figure there were regional variations, with rises in just four of the 10 regions covered and falls of up to 2.2% in the others.

Rates on buy-to-let mortgages are set to rise in coming months, a study has warned. Landlords, along with other buyers, have benefited from the Government's Funding for Lending Scheme in the past year with the cost for a five-year fixed rate for those with a 25pc deposit tumbling from from 6pc to just over 5pc, including fees.

A Southampton quayside development will today (24 July, 2013) be the first to benefit from a government scheme to build homes specifically for private rent. Housing Minister Mark Prisk today welcomed the first deal under the Government's £1 billion Build to Rent scheme, to deliver homes private rent as part of a 1,600-home development at the Centenary Quay development.

Wednesday 24th July 2013 House purchase mortgage approvals by high street banks last month were 37,278 - up from 36,290 in May. Although below the 38,300 figure which had been forecast by analysts, total mortgage approvals were 33% higher than last year. The average approval value for house purchase was £160,100, up from £153,000 a year ago.

A rather depressing headline was emblazoned across The Metro this morning: "Born in the 1980s? Forget having a place of your own". Great news for a Monday; new research by the National Housing Federation says we face an uphill struggle to buy or rent a home over the next seven years with rents in 2020 expected to be 46% higher than they are today.

There can be no doubt that the last couple of years has seen the government look to boost the property market in the UK. After initially drawing criticism for ending the stamp duty holiday, the bringing in of Funding for Lending and Build to Let among other schemes has helped to restore some faith in what Westminster is doing.

The Government today insisted only credit-worthy borrowers will be able to buy homes with its expanding housing stimulus programme as it revealed more details on the Help-to-Buy scheme. Chancellor George Osborne met major housebuilders and mortgage lenders to flesh out plans to underwrite £130 billion of mortgage lending with state guarantees - including banning second home buyers and people with property abroad.
